Dalai Lama in Hawaii...

There was an interesting article on Midweek magazine about the recent visit of the Dalai Lama to Hawai'i. He was spreading the message of peace and happiness. “We are social animals. For an individual to live a happy life - this I believe is the point of life - and even our individual existence, it depends very much on other people,” he said.

So what does happiness really look like? One of the most famous phrases in the US Declaration of Independence is "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Of these three unalienable rights, the pursuit of happiness is probably the most alien to us. Oh we definitely know how to pursue careers, relationships, and material things. These make us happy right?

Only for a little while because I hear so many stories of people changing careers because they're not happy.
life lessons from American Idol

Anyway, our church here in Hawaii just started a series called "A Love that Lasts." This week, P Billy spoke about building blocks in lasting relationships and he used American Idol as an illustration a couple of times. So it got me thinking, you can learn a lot of life lessons from watching this show. So in honor of the last four finalists, here are four building blocks to a lasting relationship from American Idol:

Kuliouou Ridge Trail is about 15 minutes away from Waikiki, its an intermediate hike that takes about 2.5-3 hours. Enjoy the 360 deg summit view.

On hot days, you can hike in the morning, make it back down before lunch, pick up a bento (boxed lunch) on your way to the beach and cool off by taking a dip.

I once was blind...

Behind the song you love is a story you will never forget.

Amazing Grace-Movie based on the life of British anti-slavery pioneer William Wilberforce and follows his 18th century political career, which placed him at odds with some of the most powerful men of the time, including the king.

In this clip, William Wilberforce is talking with John Newton.

John Newton was a slave trader. He trafficked thousands of men, women and children from Africa to the auction blocks. In 1748, a violent storm threatened to sink his ship and he fell to his knees and prayed to God for mercy. It was that night that John Newton sensed that there is a God who hears and answers prayers...even to the worst of men. Over time Newton repented...as a preacher and writer of hymns. In 1772 he wrote a hymn called "Faith's Review and Expectation." A song that you know as AMAZING GRACE
